Book Review : Sam Walton Made in America MY STORY and what I learnt from it.
"A definite must read for every entrepreneur , businessman and a leader for this tale is about how success looks like and about countless values to be followed in order to be successful. " -Pradyumn Tiwari
About the writing style:
This book is quiet descriptive and explains fairly a lot of details about life and journey of Sam Walton and the success of Walmart.
"A little too descriptive and worth it "
The writing style is plain and simple therefore you don't require an enriched lexicon to comprehend this one.
"General words strung beautifully to recount a wonderful tale"
Personal Remarks:
This book has a lot to teach about business, life, wisdom, success and several other aspects of life but is a little too much in detail and some may get bored over time.
Major Takeaways:
- Customer is the God in a business and holds the power to sack everyone from an associate to the CEO of the company.
- Nothing can match the quality of being competitive in a business where you have to constantly improve and outgrow/outsell/beat your competition on each and every aspect.
- The power of a strong company culture is unparalleled as it is this culture which holds together a company in all the highs and lows of its being and is the reason which holds together the vast empire i.e. Walmart.
- If you want your customers to be treated fairly then treat your employees fairly.
- Learn the value of each dollar and be as frugal as you can , there is no shame in it. Mr. Sam Walton always use to fret about on the idea of prodigality i.e. wasting time and money carelessly and showing off what you have. Even after being the richest man in America he stuck to his values and spent frugally and wisely,
- Being gregarious. A gregarious person is usually a more successful leader and businessman as he becomes more amicable and make people like him genuinely the more people will support him and thus further extending his relations and acknowledgement.
- Being progressive in both the sense of technology and management. Keep on changing things and try to do it regularly, sometimes even for the sake of change only not if for the betterment as this is a wonderful habit to improvise and improve.
- Family comes first, although Sam was busy most of his time with his business but he always somehow managed to find out time for his kids and taught them values and discipline along with how money works.
- Being humble and treating everyone in a fair way and maintaining a culture of competitiveness in the company is one the major takeaways from this autobiography.
- Take Risks. Sam Walton from the start of his career was continuously taking calculated risks, he was in a lot of debt before taking the company public and was working hard and opening stores at a fast pace.
- Learn from your failures. Earlier in his career Sam Walton faced a major setback his only store at that time was taken from his and he was forced to start again from the scratch but he kept on moving, learning from the experience and used these lessons all his life.
- Try to become a MONOPOLY in your business not a fair competition although the way for monopoly is sometimes through fair competition but being a monopoly is the ultimate goal.
- Word of Mouth is the best advertising you can get and it comes from your customers , so you know what to do now.
But no one can capture the essence of this must read for entrepreneurs in a blog. Do read it.
Thanks for reading.
