Is India a poor country, really?
So, recently the Snapchat's CEO Evan Spiegel was allegedly reported to have said that 'India is a poor country and Snapchat's expansion there will not be fruitful'. This statement backfired and angered 1.2 billion indians who were furious about his remarks and showed their disdain by rating the app poorly and submitting negative feedbacks about the app. Now I don't know whether he said that or not and I don't even care about him.
But seriously, was he right or was he wrong?(Don't answer this just now and wait until some facts).
If we consider GDP then NO India is not a poor country in fact it's the 5th largest economy in the world. We are preceeded by US, EU, China and Japan. So it could be easily apprehended that India is pretty well off and it's presence has a significant impact over the world economy. This shows how big our economy is but not how well off our people are. It is not the GDP that matters but the per capita income which matters.
GDP per capita for USA= 55,836.79 USD
GDP per capita for India= 1,581.59 USD
i.e. GDP per capita for USA is roughly 35 times the GDP per capita for India.
So, metaphorically if in USA 100 apples and consumed by 10 people then for the same 100 apples there are 28 people to be fed instead of the case of 10. And to worsen the case these 100 apples are not evenly distributed. Rich and middle class takes up the most of the share and rest is left for poor and the lower middle class.
This is the reality of India and thus for a common man or a rich man india may not be a poor country but for poor it still is a poor country.
I myself am a nationalist and love my country and wish to contribute to its growth and glory one day but here we are lacking and we need a lot of improvement on our part to level out these differences
Hope for the best.
Rise and shine.
